Why an Xbox Handheld May Not Be the Future of Gaming

In 2024, rumors were buzzing about Xbox’s plans to develop a new device—a handheld console. But this wouldn’t be a direct competitor to the Nintendo Switch or popular handheld PCs like the Steam Deck, ROG Ally, and Legion Go. Instead, it would be designed to complement the Xbox ecosystem, allowing players to enjoy their games on the go, away from their main consoles. Things got more interesting when Xbox head Phil Spencer confirmed the speculation in a Bloomberg interview, stating that there are plans for a handheld device, though it wouldn’t be released for a few more years. This statement all but confirmed that an Xbox handheld was indeed in the works. However, the more I thought about it and heard the growing speculation, the more I started to question whether such a device would ever see the light of day. Let me explain why I’m not convinced, and why I think the idea of an Xbox handheld might not materialize—at least not in the way many expect. The Handheld Market Is Already Saturated The most obvious reason for my doubts is the sheer number of handheld gaming devices already on the market. Aside from the Xbox fanbase, there’s a growing list of devices competing for attention—Steam Deck, ROG Ally, and Legion Go are just a few examples. Additionally, we can’t overlook mobile phones, which have become a huge player in the handheld space. Xbox has also been emphasizing that “everything is an Xbox.” This mantra includes smartphones and handheld gaming PCs, meaning players can already enjoy Xbox games on these devices. Given that Xbox has been pushing this idea, it raises the question: why would they invest millions into developing a dedicated handheld device? Phones today are becoming more powerful, and with the addition of controller attachments, they can easily provide a fantastic gaming experience. With this option already available, is there really a need for Xbox to create its own handheld?
