TV Review: Everything’s Gonna to Be Okay
Everything’s Gonna to Be Okay is the second television series from Australian comedian Josh Thomas. His previous series, Please Like Me, was a funny and touching story based on his life as a young gay man. Everything’s Gonna Be Okay has similar elements of comedy, seriousness, and earnestness. Josh plays a young man who becomes the guardian of his teenage half sisters following the death of a semi-estranged father.
The show is full of heart, with the teenage girls played by child actors around the right age, making their struggles more authentic and believable. The storyline of Matilda, who is autistic, manages to be both comedic and caring. There are storylines exploring the tricky spaces of autism and consent, social cues, and expectations and limitations. The actor who plays Matilda is also on the spectrum, which may add to the authenticity.
The dialogue is snappy and self-deprecating, in a show that will have you laughing and crying within a 30-minute episode.
Everything’s Gonna Be Okay gets 4/5 stars from me.
The second season is being release this April on Freeform, and then will be available on Hulu.
